Here in the United States, National Friendship Week is celebrated annually on the third week of August. While being a good friend to others is something that should be strived for year-round, this is the perfect week to put in that extra effort toward it.
What exactly about friendship makes it such an important aspect of life?
Well for one, having that companionship is more important for your well being than you might think. Knowing that you have that support system will make you feel more confident when you make big decisions in your life. When problems occur and you need someone to lean on, your friends are right there to support and help you. And even if there is not a specific situation that you're dealing with, it is always nice to spontaneously call or visit a friend just to brighten a day. Your close friends may not be nearby, but knowing you have them in your life will make you feel less lonely. When it comes to a passion, a hobby, or work, having a friend to do it with will make you feel more engaged and part of whatever you do.
Your close friends are also an important source of motivation. Whether you are applying for a tough position, struggling to get through a course in school, or trying out a new goal, friends are there to encourage and support you. Take fitness for example. Are you trying a new habit of going to the gym every day? On those days that you feel lazy and discouraged, a close friend can be there to motivate you to go and maybe even tag along with you. Having people in your life who care about you and your success is important to making you feel strong and confident through your life.
Finally, friends can help you make better choices. For example, if your friends eat healthy and exercise regularly, it might convince you to do the same. If you have a bad habit you do out of stress, your friends can help stop this by being there for you and helping you get through tough times in other ways. Or maybe you are in a relationship that you do not realize is hurting you more than helping you. In a case like this, your friends are there to give you an outsider's perspective and be there to support you in making the best decisions.
So for National Friendship Week, be that support system for your friends. Be a companion to them when you think they might feel lonely. Motivate them when you see them struggling. And help them to make the best choices for themselves. You never know how big of an impact you can make on someone's life.
