Want of hangman Capital Punishment languishing

0

A bizarre news surprised me when I came across a headline that said that a capital punishment is fading in want of hangman.. I went through and learnt that the person Piara Singh was arrested in a murder case in 1991. His three sons Sarabjit, Gurdev and Satnam, were also subsequently charged with. He was awarded with capital punishment in 1996. Since then on he has been living in a 12x6 room and waiting for the hangman or the saviour to let him escape from that filthy world..

The octogenarian Pira Singh now neither can see nor even move properly. Piara Singh a resident of Baserke village in Amritsar, were found guilty of firing at a gathering to celebrate a marriage in November, 1991. His three sons were also charged with this case. As reported there had been an old enmity that compelled him to commit this. The violence caused death of 17 people. Thought Piara Singh prayed in his defence that the incident was a spillover of an earlier altercation between him and his neighbouring family that injured his nephew and killed his servant.

According to Navkiran Singh, the lawyer and a human rights activist ‘‘I was moved by his plight when I accidentally stumbled upon him when I visited the Amritsar jail in 2006 to collect data on death row inmates, I decided I would fight for him. But now Piara just prays for death. It is horrifying.’’

He had also prayed for mercy. The petition has been pending since 1997 in Rashtrapati Bhavan. Piara suffering in Dementia has developed osteoarthritis in both knee joints and acid peptic disease. As a result of prolonged incarceration Piara has symptoms of mild psychotic disorder which at times results in him hallucinating

While his initial mercy petition is gathering dust in Delhi, closer home a PIL was filed in Punjab and Haryana high court in August 2006, pleading, among other things, that it is inhuman to keep convicts like Piara in solitary confinement and that they should be kept with other convicts. It also pleaded that Piara’s death sentence be commuted to life imprisonment.

Bhuvan, the Indian mapping application launched

0

After Google and Wikimapia, now its India to launch its own mapping application. Bhuvan, the Indian mapping application has been launched.

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has launched this application promising to provide satellite images of varying resolution of India's surface. The 3D mapping tool uses images taken a year ago by ISRO's seven remote sensing satellites, including Cartosat-1 and Cartosat-2. The satellites can even capture the images of objects as small as a car on a road. The application is a result of 4 years effort of Hyderabad based National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA).

NRSA is a part of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) and has been working on this project with the data provided by Indian Educational satellite Resourcesat-I

According to NRSA, Bhuvan will focus on rural and thematic applications like wasteland mapping and terrain profile along with weather details like humidity levels.NRSA has also cleared its point declaring that only the data approved by the Govt of India will be seen using Bhuvan. The viewers can zoom any picture up to 10 metres compared to Google Earth’s 200 metres and Wikimapi’s 50 metres.

The features include: Access, explore and visualize 2D and 3D image data along with rich thematic information on Soil, wasteland, water resources, superpose administrative boundaries of choice on images as required, visualization of AWS ( Automatic Weather Stations) data/information in a graphic view and use tabular weather data of user choice, Heads-Up Display ( HUD) naviation controls ( Tilt slider, north indicator, opacity, compass ring, zoom slider), navigation using the 3D view pop-up menu (Fly-in, Fly out, jump in, jump around, view point), drawing 2D objects (Text labels, polylines, polygons, rectangles, 2D arrows, circles, ellipse), drawing 3D Objects (placing of expressive 3D models, 3D polygons, boxes), snapshot creation (copies the 3D view to a floating window and allows to save to a external file)

The website can be accessed on http://www.bhuvan.nrsc.gov.in. But to get all the features a visitor needs to install the plugin by registering himself there.

Unique Identity for all Indians

0

If everything goes well we will have the power we have been craving for. The power of identity, the power of being known and the power of nationality. The Unique Identity Card that will empower us to travel around the globe freely.

The unique ID number will not substitute other existing numbers a person may have (PAN, passport number, ration card number). Rather, it will be an additional, unique number to be cited along with existing numbers for different purposes.

The man who has conceived the idea is none but the co-founder and former CEO of Infosys Technologies Nandan Nilekeni. He has decided to help the Govt. by shorting out the fake identities and creating a universal database covering all the necessary information needed to identify a person.

Nilekani and his team will make available a unique ID database to all ministries and other partners, who can then integrate their databases (covering passports, ration cards, job cards, PAN cards) with the unique ID database

12000 cards would be issued within 2010 and the rest will be available within 5 years. The effort has already been admired by all the classes of society. Nandan’s contribution towards the greater good of the nation will not only help the Govt. but also empower its citizens.
